Learn the Terms Investors Actually Use
Wall Street talks in shorthand. These eight terms come up constantly, and the full glossary covers hundreds more in plain English.
Bull Market
A market where prices are rising or expected to rise. Investors are optimistic and confident.
Bear Market
A market where prices have fallen 20% or more from recent highs, usually alongside widespread pessimism.
P/E Ratio
Stock price divided by earnings per share. One of the most common ways to judge whether a stock is cheap or expensive.
Dividend Yield
Annual dividend payment divided by stock price. It tells you the cash flow you receive per dollar invested.
Market Capitalization
The total market value of a company's shares. Multiply the stock price by the number of shares outstanding to get it.
Exchange-Traded Fund (ETF)
A fund that trades on stock exchanges. You get the diversification of a mutual fund and can trade it like a stock.
Compound Interest
Interest earned on your principal plus all the interest you've already earned. It's how small accounts become big ones.
Diversification
Spreading investments across various assets to reduce risk. Don't put all your eggs in one basket.
