Understanding Your RMD Calculator Results

An RMD calculator helps you determine your Required Minimum Distribution from traditional retirement accounts. This RMD calculator uses the latest IRS Uniform Lifetime Table updated by the SECURE Act 2.0. Use this RMD calculator to avoid the steep penalties for missing required withdrawals.

Key RMD calculator concepts:

  • What is an RMD: Required Minimum Distributions are the IRS's way of saying "we let you defer taxes long enough." Once you hit 73, you must start withdrawing money from traditional retirement accounts each year—and paying taxes on those withdrawals.
  • When do RMDs start: Thanks to the SECURE Act 2.0, RMDs now begin at age 73 (increased from 72). Your first RMD must be taken by April 1 of the year after you turn 73. All subsequent RMDs must be withdrawn by December 31 each year.
  • How are RMDs calculated: The IRS divides your account balance by a "life expectancy factor" from their tables. This factor gets smaller each year, which means your RMD gets larger as a percentage of your balance.
  • What accounts require RMDs: Traditional IRA, SEP IRA, SIMPLE IRA, 401(k), 403(b), 457(b), and other defined contribution plans. Note: Roth IRAs do NOT require RMDs during the owner's lifetime.
  • What happens if you don't take your RMD: The penalty is steep: 25% of the amount you should have withdrawn (reduced from 50% by SECURE Act 2.0). If you correct it promptly, the penalty may be reduced to 10%.

Using this RMD calculator: Enter your birth year and your account balance as of December 31 of last year. The RMD calculator will determine your age, apply the correct life expectancy factor, and calculate your required withdrawal. This RMD calculator also projects future RMD amounts assuming your account continues to grow, helping you plan your retirement income strategy.
