About VA Math

The VA uses the "whole person" theory to combine disability ratings. Each rating is applied to your remaining efficiency, not added together. This usually results in a lower combined rating than simple addition.

2025 VA Compensation Rates

What is a VA Disability Calculator?

A VA disability calculator is a tool that helps veterans calculate their combined VA disability rating and estimate their monthly compensation. This VA disability calculator uses the official VA math formula (also called the "whole person" theory) to combine multiple disability ratings.

Our VA disability calculator includes 2025 compensation rates and calculates additional payments for dependents. Use this VA disability calculator to understand your potential benefits before applying or after receiving individual ratings.

How VA Math Works (Whole Person Theory)

The VA uses a unique method to combine disability ratings called the "whole person" theory. Instead of adding percentages together, each disability is applied to your remaining efficiency.

Example: 50% + 30% disability

1. Start at 100% efficient (0% disabled)
2. Apply 50%: 100% - (100% × 50%) = 50% efficient
3. Apply 30%: 50% - (50% × 30%) = 35% efficient
4. Disability: 100% - 35% = 65% disabled
5. Round to nearest 10% = 70% rating

VA Disability Rounding Rules

The VA always rounds combined disability ratings to the nearest 10%. Understanding the rounding rules can help you know your final rating.

Dependent Compensation

Veterans with a combined rating of 30% or higher receive additional monthly compensation for qualified dependents.

Qualified dependents include:
• Spouse
• Children under 18
• Children ages 18-23 attending school
• Dependent parent(s)
• Seriously disabled adult child

The amount increases with your disability rating. At 100% with dependents, compensation can exceed $5,000 per month.

When Do VA Disability Ratings Change?

Your VA disability rating can change if:

  • You file a claim for a new condition
  • Your existing condition worsens and you file for an increase
  • The VA conducts a routine examination
  • You appeal a rating decision

Cost of Living Adjustments (COLA)

VA disability compensation rates are adjusted annually for cost of living. The 2025 rates shown in this VA disability calculator reflect the most recent COLA increase. These adjustments typically occur in December and take effect January 1st of the following year.
